Broadcasters

Printer-friendly version

This is a short (and therefore incomplete) list of some of the major world-band broadcasters. Most (but not all) of them broadcast to North America at some point during the day or week. I have marked the stations that I have personally heard (on my Degen DE 1102 or my Sony ICF-SW7600GR) with an asterisk (*). Many stations also stream their programming on the Internet, and some, such as the BBC World Service, have subsequently ceased their radio transmissions (to North America, at least).

While the influx of new information technologies, coupled with a massive corporate consolidation of domestic station ownership and an increasingly jingoistic sense of nationalism, may be reducing the size of the U.S. audience, much of the rest of the world's population (particularly in regions without Internet access) still relies heavily on radio transmissions. Moreover, the recent amendments to the FISA in the United States do not change the fact that radio listening, unlike online activities, cannot be reasonably tracked and logged by the NSA.

Unless indicated otherwise, each link here connects to the English version of the station's website.
