  • The Bus

    National Marriage Equality March (2009)

Organized by Equality Across America and several other organizations, roughly 200,000 activists marched on Washington, D.C. on Sunday, 11 October 2009 to demand that people in the United States be allowed to marry whom they choose. The theme of both the march and the rally in front of the Capitol Building that followed was that marriage is a fundamental civil right for everyone. That it is denied to many people on the basis of their sexual orientation constitutes a form of shameful discrimination, particularly in a society that claims to have progressed beyond chauvinism and religious bigotry.

  • Hovde Mall from the fountain

    SJP Flag Demonstration (2009)

On 8 April 2009, members of Students for Justice in Palestine placed 1,389 flags in the mall in front of Purdue's Hovde Hall. Each flag represented one of the 1,380 Palestinian and 9 Israeli lives claimed by Israel's 22-day attack on the Gaza Strip at the start of 2009. Most of the students who saw the memorial were interested in learning more, although a small number of students from a reactionary campus group did begin protesting.

  • African Elephants in their enclosure

    Indianapolis Zoo (2007)

Photos from a trip that Michelle and I made to the Indianapolis Zoo in August 2007. Being a scientist, I have included the basic taxonomic information about the different species of animals we encountered on our visit. For the sake of simplicity, I stuck to the traditional taxonomic categories in the descriptions (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, Genus species). In cases where i didn't already know an organism's taxonomic designation (i.e. if it wasn't a bird), I looked the information up in the Integrated Taxonomic Information System. Clicking on the English name will open a page with that animal's fact sheet at the University of Michigan's Animal Diversity Web (if it is available).
